Kouaoua, New Caledonia: The Nickel Industry Tastes the Flames Again

In the early morning hours of May 24th in Kouaoua, the SLN conveyor belt was again targeted by flames at around 0400 hrs.

According to the media outlet ‘Nouvelle Cal├ędonie La 1ere‘ on 24.05.2020, “200 meters of the serpent (name given by locals to the nickel mine conveyor belt) was set on fire in two distinct places: 100 m above, and 100 m below, a hundred meters from the access portal to the mine, at the level of the creek. The fire was extinguished by SLN’s (the mining company) sprinkler trucks. The conveyor belt that carries the nickel ore to the waterfront has been a regular target for arsonists since 2017.”

The last arson attack on the Kouaoua serpent dates back to May 2019. Since July 2017, it has suffered the same fate some 20 times.

The multiple convictions of individuals for these fires against the nickel mining industry have never undermined the arsonist opposition.
