During the early hours of August 20th, 2019, a suspicious device caught the attention of a security operation that was being carried out prior to the visit of President Piñera.
Outside the main Investigation Headquarters of the PDI (Investigations Police) on Vega de Saldías street, which is adjacent to a police station in the heart of Chillán, an explosive device had been placed without initially raising any suspicions.
After some time, the police managed to detect the device which was comprised of a fire extinguisher filled with a kilo of black powder that was activated by a timing system that either failed or was deactivated by the police.
Personnel from the GOPE (Police Special Operations Group) and various other police departments quickly arrived at the scene to examine the device and CCTV footage.
Chadwick, the Minister of the Interior, explained to the media: “an explosive device was indeed placed in an Investigative Police barracks but it was detected in time and subsequently deactivated…I am yet to learn the results of the investigation…as to what magnitude or power the device had, I am awaiting the results before making any further comment”.
So far no group has claimed responsibility for the placement of the device.
