*Important Correction (05.09.19): It should be noted that Surya Anta is actually an Indonesian citizen, making him the first Indonesian to be charged with treason for supporting the West Papua Freedom Struggle. According to latest information he is being held in complete isolation in a windowless room and is forced to listen to nationalist songs all day.
01.09.19: On Saturday, August 31st, 2019, Surya Anta, the spokesperson for the Indonesian People’s Front for West Papua (FRI-WP) was arrested by two plainclothes police officers at Plaza Indonesia. He was then taken to the Metro Jaya Regional Police HQ. During the arrest, the police told him he was being investigated for treason, relating to West Papua.
On Friday, August 30th, 2019, two West Papuan students were arrested at a hostel in Depok. The police broke down the door and arrested the students at gunpoint.
On Saturday, August 31st, 2019, another student was arrested during a solidarity action for West Papua outside the Metro Jaya Regional Police HQ in Jakarta.
On August 31st, 2019 a joint task-force comprising of TNI (Indonesian Armed Forces) and Polri (Indonesian Police) raided the Kab. Nduga West Papuan Student Dormitory in Jakarta. 3 West Papuan women were arrested. The raid took place without any official arrest warrant. Mobile phones were seized. One of the women was assaulted during the raid.
In all, 8 people have been arrested and detained so far. It is believed that are all being held at Brimob (paramilitary police) HQ in Kelapa Dua. Their names are:
