The Indonesian State has reacted in typical style. Propaganda reports and statements from the Indonesian government blame ‘unverified news’ and ‘hoaxes’ for spreading unrest in West Papua. Human rights lawyer Veronica Koman, an important source of information about the protests in West Papua and the racist attacks against West Papuan students in Indonesia has been specifically targeted in an online campaign by the Indonesian State, accused of being responsible for ‘disinformation’.
Today, Wednesday, August 21st, the protests continue. Significantly, a huge protest is taking place in Timika, the town closest to the multinational Freeport mine– whose presence in West Papua is strongly opposed by the West Papuan people. The town of Fakfak is reported to be paralyzed, with burning barricades blocking roads.
Also today, reports and video have emerged of fresh Indonesian occupation forces arriving in Manokwari overnight. These same reports indicate that additional troops and police will also be deployed in Sorong. The Indonesian State have announced that they are deliberately slowing down internet speeds in several locations in West Papua to make it difficult to share photos and videos of the protests.
West Papua: 21.08.19: 100s of Indonesian soldiers and police arrived in Manokwari overnight. Manokwari is the city where some of the biggest protests took place over the past 2 days and where the local parliament building was set on fire. There are reports that troops and soldiers are also being sent to Sorong, where rioting took place for 2 days running and the local prison was attacked enabling approx. 250 prisoners to escape. Meanwhile internet bandwidth has been intentionally slowed down in many parts of West Papua by Indonesian authorities in an attempt to prevent the sharing of videos and photos of the protests online.
