On the 15th of August, 2019, West Papuan students and their supporters demonstrated in several Indonesian cities on the anniversary of the so-called ‘New York Agreement’, a pact that was signed in the USA in 1962 by the Netherlands and Indonesia without any representation or consultation with the West Papuan people. This pact provided the basis for the Indonesian occupation of West Papua, an occupation that continues to this day.
In Ambon in Maluku, 11 West Papuan students were beaten up and arrested after their protest was forcibly dispersed.
In Ternate, also in Maluku, the demonstration by the Papua Students Community (KMP) and the Indonesian Peoples’ Front for West Papua (FRI-WP) was forcibly dispersed shortly after it began. 16 of the comrades were arrested and beaten while being transported to the Ternate police station.
In Malang, in Java, the West Papuan students were attacked by civilian nationalist militia members. They were beaten and attacked with rocks while police looked on. 24 students were injured, 5 of them seriously.
Below are two statements in English, calling for solidarity, from the Aliansi Mahasiwa Papua / Papua Students Alliance. The first statement concerns what happened in Malang, in Java, and the second statement concerns what took place in Ternate, in Maluku…
Call for Solidarity!
USA is the actor behind colonialism in West Papua!
57 years ago the governments of Indonesia, the Netherlands and the USA made a pact about West Papuan territory (known as the New York Agreement) without West Papuans themselves. So, today (August 15, 2019) West Papuan students (the Papuan Student Alliance) and Indonesian students in Malang joined together in protesting against that illegal agreement.
The police attacked the protest, beating the protesters and causing serious injuries.

New Update from Ternate City, North Maluku!
Comrades of the Front Rakyat Indonesia untuk West Papua / Indonesian People’s Front for West Papua (FRI-WP) and the Komunitas Mahasiswa Papua / Papua Student Community (KMP) in Ternate were repressed.
They were beaten to a pulp while being transported in pickup trucks. They are now being held at the Ternate police station.
Their protest (to mark the anniversary of the so-called ‘New York Agreement’ in 1962 that resulted in the Indonesian occupation of West Papua) lasted for about 5 minutes before it was surrounded by police and TNI (Indonesian Armed Forces) – both in plain clothes and uniform. Around 16 people were arrested.
Please show solidarity! Please share! Please advocate!
